Nodular Acne Treatment – Your Alternatives

Posted under acne laser by admin on Friday 10 February 2012 at 00:35

Acne is a common form of skin disorder. It can vary in severity, appearing as pimples, whiteheads or blackheads in its mild form or as cysts and pustules in its more severe form. The nodular form of acne is characterized by blocked oil glands that produce inflamed skin and tissue.

Unlike the simple pimple or whitehead, nodules form a dense, dome-like lesion or nodule which may also appear irregular. This lesion is red, swollen and usually affects not only the surrounding area of the skin but also deeper layers. If left unchecked, nodular acne can result to the destruction of tissue and produce scars.

Sometimes, nodules appear alongside cysts. When this happens, the condition is referred to as nodulocystic acne. Nodular acne is not only very unsightly, it can also be quite painful.

Treatments for nodular acne

People suffering from the nodular form of acne should not try self medication or self treatment. It is important that they seek the advice of a licensed dermatologist for proper diagnosis and prescription.

The best way to treat nodular acne is to address it immediately during its early stages. This is to prevent further infection and scarring. Antibiotics may be prescribed to help stop infection and prevent further break outs. Antibiotics also help minimize inflammations and ease the swelling of the skin.

If the patient does not respond to this treatment or if improvement is too slow, a doctor may prescribe a retinoid called isotretinoin. This is an oral medication that is usually required to be taken 1-2 times daily, with a course of treatment lasting anywhere from 15-20 weeks. Isotretinoin addresses the problem of excessive sebum production, effectively reducing the amount of oil produced by the skin and preventing clogged pores.

Isotretinoin, while quite effective, also has side effects. It is not prescribed to pregnant women because it has been known to cause birth defects. It also has certain contraindications such as itching, mouth and skin dryness, photosensitivity, muscle aches and nosebleeds. This explains why doctors often monitor their patients closely when administering this drug.

Hormonal treatment

Another method of treatment for nodular acne used exclusively for women is hormone therapy, usually in the form of low estrogen contraceptive pills and anti-androgen drugs like spironolactone. Like isotretinoin, these types of nodular acne treatments also help reduce the production of sebum.

Other forms of nodular acne treatment

A doctor may directly remove excess sebum and dead skin cells from the skin using sterile equipment. For enlarged lesions, an injection of cortisone may also be used. Cortisone works directly on the affected spot, minimizing the swelling and reducing the pain of the inflamed nodules.

During treatment for nodular acne, don’t be impatient about the results. Nodular acne usually takes time to improve because the infection is found deeper in the skin and usually, the waste material produced is not readily discharged. Check with your doctor regularly and follow your treatment procedures faithfully.

Treating the scars

Once scarring has occurred, a doctor may recommend surgery or laser therapy. These can help minimize the appearance of scars and reduce the bumps. Sometimes, a treatment called dermabrasion may also be used in conjunction with laser treatment. In severe cases where scarring involves deep, depressed scars, fat transfer to the affected area may be performed.

Living with nodular acne

If you have nodular acne and are undergoing treatment for it, make sure to follow your doctor’s recommendation for treatment, especially if it involves taking antibiotics. A complete course of treatment is essential to the success of a prescribed medication and therapy. If you must use a special diet or change some of your lifestyle and habits, do so.

Treatment for nodular acne may also involve a multi-pronged approach, using a main treatment (such as antibiotics or laser therapy) and supplementing it with a cleansing regimen. Specially formulated soaps and facial washes are commonly used to help reinforce the effect of the treatment.

The root cause of acne is still unknown, which makes a permanent cure highly unlikely. However, that doesn’t mean that people who have nodular acne should allow themselves to be limited by this condition physically, mentally or socially. There are numerous options for the treatment of nodular acne and with the help of a doctor, it can be conquered.

Blackheads – Read This Before You Squeeze!

Posted under acne laser by admin on Saturday 4 February 2012 at 22:14

For those with oily skin, pores can easily become blocked with excess sebum and the contents turn black. The most commonly affected areas are the nose, chin and forehead. Other parts of the body can also be affected, including the neck and back. There is a great temptation to squeeze out the contents to remove the unsightly blemish. Before you do anything about this problem, there are some important facts you should know about squeezing blackheads.

Firstly, just touching your face with your hands can spread bacteria which can lead to spots. It is surprising how many times a day we touch our faces without even thinking about it. The best method of preventing blemishes is to keep the face clean by using a gentle cleanser three or four times a day. For a deep cleansing treatment, remove any make up and excess oil with your daily cleanser. Open your pores by placing a warm face cloth on the skin and leave for one to two minutes. Follow immediately by using an exfoliating scrub, and then close the pores with a toner or by splashing the face with cold water.

Squeezing blackheads should be avoided as this can create more problems. The correct method for removal is to apply gentle pressure around the affected area, and specially designed cosmetic tools can be purchased for this purpose. The common method of pinching the skin together can actually push the blockage further back in, causing inflammation and the possibility of enlarging the pore even further. This can sometimes create a lump which can only be removed by a clinician using a Cannula to create a larger hole to release the built up pus. Sometimes after removing the plug, the pore remains open and appears as a hole which is very difficult to conceal with make up.

Another problem created by pinching is possible damage to blood vessels or capillaries which can be seen on the surface of the skin as red spider veins. You may require expensive laser treatment to remove these broken veins, so you must think carefully about how to remove blackheads.

The best way to get rid of blackheads is with adhesive pore cleansing strips. These are applied to the affected area and slowly peeled away. The contents of blocked pores can be seen on the strip after it is removed, so you know the product actually works. A combination of prevention and treatment of problem areas is required to ensure that your skin stays clear and healthy. Avoiding alcohol, spicy and fried foods, eating a healthy diet and drinking eight glasses of water a day will also help to improve your complexion.

Makeup For Acne – Tips For Concealing Pitted Acne Scars

Posted under acne laser by admin on Monday 30 January 2012 at 18:01

Acne scars are a lasting reminder of acne, whether recent or from years ago. While there are different surgical procedures for reducing or eliminating these scars, most people rely on some form of concealer makeup to cover them up. Depending on the type of acne scar you want to cover, you will need to use different techniques and makeup.

There are several different types of acne scars, including pitted, raised, and post inflammatory hyperpigmentation (which is not technically a scar). The methods discussed in this article address the ways to cover pitted scars, such as icepick, boxcar, or other depressed scars. These types of scars present a challenge to conceal since they are not even with the rest of the skin.

In order to best conceal pitted acne scars, you will first need to use a filler to raise the scar as much as possible to the same level as the rest of your skin. Two ways you can do this are with:

Wrinkle fillers. If they can fill wrinkles, then they can do the same with pitted scars. While these are unlikely to raise the scar significantly and are only temporary, they can reduce the amount of concealer you need to fill the scar.
Thick, creamy concealers. A thick concealer that is the same color as your skin can be applied with a very small concealer brush. Apply a small amount of concealer to the pitted portion of the scar. Dab and blend carefully so that the concealer stays in the scar and the edges blend with the rest of your skin. A couple good concealers for scars are Kat Von D’s Tattoo Concealer and Smashbox High Definition Concealer. Cover FX also has a very wide range of colors for concealing scars on the face or body.

Tips for the best coverage:

Always look for a concealer that is as close to your skin tone as possible. If anything, use a slightly lighter tone, since a depressed scar can cast a slight shadow, making it look darker.
If the scar is discolored, use a corrector first in green (for red scars) or yellow (for bluish scars). Peach colors can also work with scars that have a blue tint. Use concealer after the corrector, if necessary, to even out the color to match the rest of your skin.
If applying foundation, put it on after using any wrinkle filler but before your concealer. If you apply foundation after concealer, you risk wiping off the concealer that you just worked so hard to apply. Also, you may need less concealer after applying foundation.
Always set your concealer with a loose powder. This will set it and keep your makeup from smearing during the day. This applies to both face and body makeup.

While it is possible to conceal your acne scars, it is still best to prevent them in the first place. Any time you get acne, whether it is just one pimple or many, treat it right away and keep your hands away from your face. Be particularly careful of any inflamed areas since these are the blemishes that are most likely to result in scars. There is no real substitute for the advice of a dermatologist when you have moderate to severe acne. However, do not wait until your acne is bad to start treating it.

How Safe Are Injectable Dermal Fillers?

Posted under acne laser by admin on Saturday 28 January 2012 at 05:10

As the popularity of injectable dermal fillers continues to rise, more and more women look in the mirror and slump at the sight of their deep lines and wrinkles. Social acceptance and therefore availability of fillers has certainly increased, but should we be concerned about the safety of this relatively new cosmetic treatment?

Benefits versus safety

Injectable dermal fillers have gained popularity in recent months – almost as much as Botox – and lip plumping seems to be all the rage. When administered properly, they generally offer a safe means of winding back the clock and revealing a younger you. By injecting hyaluronic acid (HA) or collagen based fillers into the skin, deep lines and folds in the skin can be smoothed and the natural collagen structures in the skin can be protected from deteriorating too quickly.

At birth a person’s natural HA concentration is around three per cent, which drops to around 0.007 per cent when that person turns 45. Therefore whilst dermal fillers will not stop time, they can recover the damage already done by boosting natural HA levels.

However as with any cosmetic treatment, fillers are not without risks and on rare occasions, adverse reactions can develop. They are several key points to note when questioning the safety of this anti aging treatment. The first is to realise that there are two kinds openly available on the UK market: biodegradable dermal fillers (non-permanent) and permanent fillers, which both offer effective wrinkle treatment.

Permanent dermal fillers can contain Polyacrylamide and Polyalkylamide and have featured heavily recently in the media as these are where most of the problems lie. Permanent and non-permanent fillers are both based on the natural substances collagen or hyaluronic acid, and these can be broken down and reabsorbed by the human body. However permanent fillers also contain synthetic substances that are non-biodegradable and therefore become a permanent fixture of the body. This poses post-treatment problems because as the skin starts to sag, the permanent fillers remain intact, creating a rather unnatural, distorted look as the face continues to change shape.

At SkinGenesis, our patients receive non-permanent biodegradable dermal fillers, which includes the hyaluronic acid based filler, Restylane, and Radiesse, which contains calcium hydroxyapatite. Of course, due to constant innovation, SkinGenesis doctors may also use other products that they consider to be the best on the market. Clients are required to visit us more regularly with non-permanent fillers, however if unwanted effects do occur, they are at least short-lived as the substance is reabsorbed by the body.

Restylane smoothes out wrinkles on the hands and face, lasts around six months and offers reduced risk of allergic reaction because it is made from non-animal sources. Radiesse has the same effects, which can last for 12 to 18 months.

Human lab rats?

The second consideration is to be aware that UK regulation of this industry is comparatively lax when considered alongside the USA. There are currently 100 types of dermal fillers available in the UK, compared to six FDA-approved types (US Food and Drug Administration) in the USA. This is because in the States, new cosmetic treatments are rigorously tested over long periods of time and only when a product receives FDA approval will it be widely available on the market. Both Restylane and Radiesse are FDA-approved brands.

Which? Magazine has previously suggested that the UK is even the ‘guinea pig’ for the industry as there is currently no FDA equivalent in the UK to manage what is and what is not available on our market. The Department of Health and the Healthcare Commission looked into tightening the restrictions in the UK, however they ultimately declared responsibility to the private health industry’s body, the Independent Healthcare Advisory Services (IHAS), which in turn said that there is little that can be done unless another agency, the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), classifies fillers as medicines. This would mean they would be regulated, like Botox, under they Medicines Act and would only be administered by licensed medical practitioners. With little regulation, this means that anyone in the beauty industry can certify themselves to administer the treatments to unsuspecting patients.

Caution is key to successful treatment

Patients should be extra vigilant when deciding where to have dermal fillers. The reluctance of the Government to tighten regulation of the industry has created a ‘buyer-beware’ culture. SkinGenesis’ dermal fillers are administered by qualified doctors and we are a registered member of the Healthcare Commission.

More than 1,500,000 treatments have been conducted around the world, with very few yielding adverse reactions to the ingredients. As an industry we expect around one in every 2000 patients to experience adverse reactions, and even then this depends on each individual person’s health.

Other minor side effects can occur, including swelling, redness, discomfort and itchiness. Immediate reactions, such as transient erythema, oedema and ecchymosis should be treated with ice and antihistamines, whilst sub-acute reactions like infections, bluish discolouration and necrosis will require medical attention.

As a general guide, patients should book treatments with a qualified, experienced doctor two to three weeks before a social engagement, to allow for the possibility of an adverse reaction. Minor side effects usually clear up within two to four days and dermal fillers should also be avoided in the following circumstances.

If you are:

o Are pregnant or breast feeding

o Are currently taking anticoagulants or aspirin

o Have a history of anaphylaxis or intolerance to previous dermal fillers

o Have a skin infection or inflammatory disease (acne herpes)

o Have permanent implants

o Have had laser skin resurfacing or skin peels within last 6 weeks

o Have been using Roaccutane within past 12 months

Eye Care After Cataract Surgery and Lens Implants

Posted under acne laser by admin on Friday 20 January 2012 at 02:31

Cataract surgery — the most performed surgery in the world — has improved markedly. This surgery has a success rate of more than 97 percent. Still, you need to take good care of your eye or eyes after surgery. The first step is putting in eye drops to prevent infection and control eye pressure.

Your eye or eyes will react to the surgery in several ways. You may have a stinging sensation, an itching sensation, a gritty feeling (your eye feels like there is sand in it), sensitivity to sunlight and bright lights. A Mayo Clinic website article, “Cataract Surgery: What You Can Expect,” describes surgery and aftercare. Do not rub your eye or press on it, warns Mayo. You may have a discharge in the corners of your eyes. To remove the discharge wipe your eye gently with a warm wash cloth. Hold the cloth over your eye gently and do not make any pointing motions.

The Cataract Surgery website, in the article “Life After Cataracts: Cataract Surgery Recover Basics,” tells patients to take prescribed medicine exactly as the doctor recommended. You can take showers after cataract surgery, the site notes, but keep your eye closed. I had cataract surgery on both eyes and lens implanted in both eyes. When I showered I kept a dry towel close at hand in case I got water or soap in my eyes.

Though my recovery was normal, I had a problem with dry eyes. I have acne rosacea and dry, gritty eyes are a symptom of it. This dryness, combined with the natural itching after cataract surgery, was bothersome, so I used artificial tears several times a day. My eye doctor approved the use of artificial tears, but said I should never use the type that gets the red out.

I also had an odd experience after my second cataract surgery and lens implant. One day, when I was in a hurry, I yanked a t-shirt over my head. I did not know the neck of the t-shit had shrunk, and it scraped against my eyes as I pulled it over my head. Thankfully, my eyes were not hurt. Though I still wear the t-shirt, I stretch the neck a bit before putting it on.

Have you heard of defensive driving? Well, you need to practice defensive living after cataract surgery and a lens implant. Guard your eyes at all times. I found this out after my husband turned over in his sleep, swung his arm over, and barely missed my eye.

Before the surgery I wore prescription sunglasses. Now I do not need them and bought a pair of over-the-counter sunglasses for every day wear. However, I have prescription eye glasses for reading. You can help your eye doctor get the best outcome from cataract surgery and a lens implant by practicing defensive living, using artificial tears if approved, taking your prescribed medicine, and putting in eye drops on schedule.

Today, I have 20/20 in both eyes and the world is a colorful place again. “Never lose an opportunity of seeing anything beautiful,” Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, “for beauty is God’s handwriting.” God’s handwriting has never looked more beautiful.

Laser Scar Removal With Starlux 1540 Fractional Non-Ablative Treatment

Posted under acne laser by admin on Tuesday 3 January 2012 at 23:34

Smooth unblemished skin is something we all desire but few of us ever have. Cuts and bruises, surgery, accidents, burns and acne all can leave very noticeable scars which can affect our self esteem and bother us. People can’t help staring at scars, which of course makes those of us who have them very self conscious.

In the past, surgical removal was the treatment of choice. However surgical removal leaves another mark and involves surgery. Laser skin resurfacing has also been used, but the laser resurfacing technique only smoothed the superficial surface of the skin, and did not correct the depression or divot in the skin that occurs with most noticeable scars.

What Causes A Scar?

A scar is caused by damage to the dermis, the deep layer of the skin below the surface. A scratch or cut, surgical incision, an acne pustule, a deep burn, or any trauma that goes deep into the skin injures the dermis. If the dermis cannot regenerate itself enough to replace all of the damaged tissue, a depression exists in the skin which appears as a visible scar.

Injuries that affect only the surface of the skin, called the epidermis, usually heal without a noticeable mark. When you see a visible mark it means that the injury was deep enough to damage the dermis and the dermis has not been regenerated.

How Can A Scar Be Improved or Removed?

What is needed for improvement in most visible scars is the production of new dermis to replace the lost dermis and plump the skin. The main component of the dermis is collagen, and if the dermis can be induced to produce enough new collagen, the depression will be plumped and become less visible.

The basis of the new Starlux 1540 process is the production of new collagen in the dermis.

How Does Starlux 1540 Laser Treatment Work?

The Starlux 1540 erbium laser beams actually go deep into the dermis and promote the growth of new collagen in the dermis. This new collagen fills the deficient dermis and plumps the skin beneath the depression.

The best thing is that the Starlux 1540 is a non-ablative laser which means that the surface of the skin is not damaged or removed during the treatment. This means that you do not have to go through the prolonged healing required by old time resurfacing. Your skin surface is still intact immediately after treatment.

What Is The Starlux 1540 Treatment Like?

We apply a numbing cream to your skin prior to treatment for your comfort. The Starlux 1540 hand piece has a small circle at the end which is pressed against the skin, and the laser is turned on. You will feel heat as the machine is turned on; however patients find it easy to tolerate.

The skin is not broken, thus your skin is only pink or red after treatment. No open wounds, no skin peel, no need for soaks or dressings. The pink may last 24 hours, but you can use makeup to cover the pink because the skin is intact.

How many Treatments Are Needed?

You will need at least 4 treatments spaced 4-5 weeks apart for maximum collagen production and skin plumping. Severe, deep wounds caused by acne or surgery may require more treatments for optimal results.

When Will I See A Result?

You will see swelling the first two weeks after treatment but this swelling is just the immediate effect of the treatment. New collagen production does not begin for 6 weeks after the treatment, and visible improvement usually is seen by the third month. Remember, we are stimulating the skin to make new collagen, which takes time. There is no quick fix for immediate results, even with surgery.

The collagen production continues for six months to a year after the last treatment.

By 6 months into the program, which is 3 months after your last and fourth treatment you will be seeing visible results. The results will continue to improve for at least 6 months after your last treatment.

Who Should Do My Starlux 1540 Treatment?

Board certified plastic surgeons and dermatologists are the experts at laser skin treatments. You should inquire if the doctor specializes or is experienced in these techniques, as many board certified doctors don’t use lasers.

The best results I have seen have been with the Starlux system made by Palomar Medical. They have a special interest in this procedure and improvement, unlike other companies that have focused mainly on wrinkle removal.

Extreme Methods To Cure Bad Acne

Posted under acne laser by admin on Sunday 17 April 2011 at 20:47

acne laser

The most common methods to get rid of acne are to use lotions and astringents, to wash correctly and lastly to eat properly.. Well for those (like I was) these simple methods may not be at all good enough to treat your acne problems. If your acne problems are very severe then you may need to consult with a dermatologist to try these for more invasive and advanced acne treatments. The most popular and effective treatments for this severe acne are chemical peels, drainage, and light therapy
